about

(Roud 861)

I have known this song for a long time and have
heard many versions of it but I feel that I mainly
learned it from the singing of Anne Briggs.

This song is said to have been first collected by
poet Padraic Colum and musicologist Herbert
Hughes. Colum’s original lyrics do not explicitly
state that the woman dies before her marriage.
John McCormack seems to have introduced the
change in the final verse lyrics from ‘young love’
to ‘dead love’, thus rendering the final line of
the song as an augury, presaging her lover’s
imminent death.
